The Malawi Government has denied claims by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) that it ordered the police to block the party’s supporters from welcoming their president Lazarus Chakwera.
During a press conference in Lilongwe, Chakwera expressed worry over the conduct of the police who barred his supporters from crossing the first checking point at Kamuzu International Airport.
However, government spokesperson Patricia Kaliati claimed that they did not order the police to stop the MCP supporters, saying the law enforcers were doing their work.
“The police were doing their work, they were not ordered but were following their vision as everyone does what their job requires,” said Kaliati.
She added that every Malawian has his own time so the government has no hand in what happened at the airport.
Chakwera went to Portugal where he was voted as the vice president of Portugal based political parties grouping, Christian Democratic Institute (CDI).
The MCP president said his trip to Portugal was important to Malawi as he has been chosen in a position of high class.
