The parliamentary committee on natural resources and the environment has commended the judiciary for giving stiff punishments to charcoal burners.
This follows the conviction of eight people to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour each by the Lilongwe High Court.
The eight were arrested for felling trees and using them to burn charcoal.
Chairperson for the committee, Werani Chilenga, said the committee is happy that that the judiciary is giving stiff punishments to people found with forest products.
”We must recommend the judiciary for the good development but we wish the punishments were stiffer than the current ones,” said Chilenga.
He added that there is need for concerted effort to end environmental degradation.
Currently, some parts of the country are experiencing dry spells which experts say have been partly caused by massive cutting down of trees in the country.
Most households in the country collect and use fuel wood as their main source of cooking energy.
Poverty is also believed to contribute to environmental degradation in the country as most people cut trees in order to burn charcoal.

We earn the leaving through burning charcol to sell it then we bring food on the table.gorvement before u bring out this story u must promote something like gas,or paraffin stove and reducing price of electricity.make the availability of this things.i think pipo will stop burning chacorl.
