Malawi to be declared a state of emergency

The Parliamentary Committee on Agricultural says President Peter Mutharika should declare Malawi a state of emergency due to the food crisis that has hit the country.

According to the committee’s chairperson, Felix Jumbe, who has visited some districts in the country, Malawi will this year face extreme hunger hence the need to immediately call for international help.

Jumbe was speaking soon after the committee’s meeting on Friday.

He said the committee has visited Mangochi, Machinga and Salima where they have seen that people in the country are struggling to find food.

“The only quick solution to the problem is for government to confess that things are not in position in the country, hence, calling for support from different organisations and other nations,” said Jumbe.

The development comes barely days after some civil society organisations in the country also told Mutharika to declare the country a state of emergency due to the prevailing food crisis.

Last year, Mutharika declared half of Malawi disaster zones following floods that killed over 200 Malawians and left thousands homeless.

  9. as far as I know our leaders, they can not make that declaration.Why?(1)They don’t want to be known that they have failed, though they have failed.(2)they mixed every issue with politics, and Malawian politics is premature, they are always doing compaign no time for development(3)Kuzikonda.

  11. Three districts out of many that we have cannot in my opinion make the president declare a state of emergency! Lets not generalize this issue but have good facts after doing a proper assessment of the situation.
