An angry mob in Machinga on Saturday killed a 62 year-old man who was caught stealing goats in the district.
Police in the district have confirmed the incident to Malawi24 and have identified the deceased as Stewart Chindevu.
Machinga Police publicist Davie Sulumba said Chindebvu went to steal goats at Pulika village in the district and he managed to find his way inside a goat kraal belonging to one Ishmael James.
However, the owner saw Chindebvu and shouted for help. His screams woke up other villagers who then descended on Chindebvu and gravely assaulted him.
Some well-wishers later took him to Nsanama health centre where he was pronounced dead.
Police are currently keeping in custody the owner of the goats in connection to the incident while other suspects are still at large.
The owner of the goats, James, comes from Pulika village, traditional authority Mlombwa in Machinga district
Meanwhile, the law enforcers have advised the general public not to take laws in their hands and to take suspects to police rather than killing them.
