Two men have been sentenced to nine months imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty to stealing Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) cables. 
The two, Amidu Kazembe and Ernest Hananiya, admitted that they stole Escom cables worth K1.5 million in Mangochi.
According to court records, the thieves were arrested two weeks ago when police in the district were conducting night patrols.
The police officers saw the two and noticed that they were carrying sacks. The law enforcers then stopped the thieves and upon inspecting the contents of the sacks, they realised that the items were Escom cables.
Escom usually complains that it loses millions of Kwacha and struggles to deliver its services properly to Malawians due to theft of electricity infrastructure in the country.
