A Malawian woman who scalded her husband’s private parts in Lilongwe has walked free as the court has only fined her.
Magistrate Court of Dowa on Monday told the woman, Juliet Chiwaya to only pay a fine of MK50,000 for burning her husband’s genitals with boiling water. The woman had earlier pleaded guilty and when passing the sentence First Grade Magistrate Cecilia Onsewa said she slapped Chiwaya with the fine to deter other would-be-offenders.
Chiwaya has since paid the fine and she is walking freely. On March 29 she handed herself in to Kanengo Police after she had poured hot water on her husband’s genitals. The incident happened at her home in Area 49, Lilongwe. Chiwaya was incensed after someone told her that her husband, Maxwell Chiwaya, was seeing another woman.
She went home where she boiled water and scalded the unsuspecting husband around the genital area.
The man sustained serious injuries and he was rushed to hospital unconscious while Chiwaya, shocked by her own act, rushed to police.
Meanwhile, Kanengo Police has condemned the tendency of men who fall victim of gender-based violence saying they interfere with the case proceedings demanding release of the offensive spouses.
“We have had several cases of abused men demanding release of their spouses and this interferes with the prosecution process,” explained Kanengo Deputy Public Relations Officer Salome Chibwana
Chiwaya, 33, hails from Malambima Village, TA Kaphuka Dedza, and the two have been married for 14 years.
