Council worker arrested for cashgate-style fraud

Police have arrested a worker at Nkhatabay District Council for stealing money in cashgate style.

Nkhatabay Police Spokesperson Ignatius Esau confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as Jonathan Kamowa who works as a Senior Systems Analyst at the council.

ArrestedAccording to Esau, between December 2015 and January 2016 the suspect took advantage of his position to steal K267, 100 from the council.

“During this period he was able to print out cheques, forge signatures and withdraw cash meant for other recurrent transactions,” he said.

When asked for his comment, Nkhatabay district Commissioner Alex Mdooka said he could not provide more information since the matter is in the hands of the police.

The suspect will soon appear in court to answer the charge of forgery and theft by public servant which are contrary to section 351 and 283 of the penal code.

Kamowa hails from Chilanyali village in the area of Traditional Authority Kuntaja in Blantyre.

  1. Not a single Council is spared from this theft. If Government was really serious on serving people & protecting public money there must be an Audit every SIX (6) months & before or after, there must be a meeting with all Residents to reflect on the past SIX (6) months. Revenue is collected every day, week, month & years without the slightest visible development rather than the employees (civil servants) becoming richer by the day.
