Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leadership had a rude awakening in the city of Blantyre as residents of the city refused to show up for their rally.

The opposition MCP was holding a rally at Nyambadwe Primary school in Blantyre following mass rallies they had in Lilongwe and Mzuzu respectively.

However at Nyambadwe in Blantyre the MCP rally was largely shunned as there were few people with photographic evidence indicating that some had been ferried to the venue.

Local media reports that only 500 people or even less attended the rally in Blantyre where the MCP were holding to press the regime of Peter Mutharika to reduce its powers.

The rally was different from the previous ones that the party has held not only due to the turnout but also because its political bedfellow, the opposition People’s Party (PP) was not in attendance. It held a parallel rally in Makhetha.

A social commentator Emily Luwani has since warned the MCP that it risks losing the 2019 election if it keeps to perform dismally in the southern region.

“This is evidence that MCP has a long way to go, it had to get an audience considering that it’s in the opposition and the alternative to DPP,” Luwani said.

Luwani added that the party should not give up but aim to strengthen grassroots structures.

At the rally MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera told Malawi leader Peter Mutharika to reduce the powers of the executive.
