Flames mentor Ernest Mtawali has praised the performance of goalkeeper Brighton Munthali after a hard-fought 0-0 draw away to Guinea.

The Silver Strikers goalie produced an eye-catching display in what was his first senior international appearance.

Munthali: Gets the praise.

He produced a string of excellent saves to thwart Guinea from getting an early goal and he continued his excellent work in the second half to earn Malawi a point.

It was however Limbikani Mzava who helped the prodigy goalkeeper to frustrate the Syli Nationale but the 21 year-old still did enough to earn positive words from his head coach.

“He is a very good goalkeeper,” Mtawali said “he responded well, he managed to live up to the pressure of the home supporters which was good for a young goalkeeper.”

He added that the technical panel opted for Munthali because he has been representing the country’s Junior Flames and that his progress has been entirely predicted.

Said Mtawali: “We had two goalkeepers, Brighton and John Soko, but we decided to use Brighton because he has been representing the Junior Flames at U-20 level and we knew that the guy has got the potential.”
