Three people are in the hands of Malawi Police officers in connection with the violence that took place in Mzuzu over the weekend.
During a joint rally held by opposition parties, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Peoples Party (PP) and the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) at Chibavi Ground met a nightmare with armed youthful looking men causing mayhem at the event.
Among other things the rally ended abruptly with atleast four people falling as serious casulties after they got hacked by the panga knives the attackers had.
According to reports, police in the Northern Region city have arrested George Mwamutope, Lumbadzi Munthali and Frank Simwaka in line with the attacks.
It remains sketchy on what led to the fracas with some reports saying the attackers were sent by the Democratic Progress Party (DPP) to disturb the rally and others citing that it was a PP faction that is against the ‘relationship’ with the other two parties.
On Monday, the MCP railed at police for not arriving at the scene to provide security and also for being mum on the issue 24 hours later.
The attacks have been heavily condemned.
Mwamutope, 36 hails from Mwangulukulu village , T/A Kilipula in Karonga district while Munthali, 29 comes from of Mature village T/A Chikulamayembe , Rumphi district and Simwaka Kashololo, 30 is from Malema vge , T/A Kyungu in Karonga District.
