President Peter Mutharika has ordered civil servants to be wearing clothes made in Malawi on Fridays in order to promote the country’s products.

Mutharika made the directive on Thursday in Lilongwe during the launch of the Buy Malawi Strategy, an initiative which encourages Malawian citizens to support local industries by buying locally produced goods and services.

The president also ordered that 18 March should be Malawi Day and on this day citizens should show their pride by celebrating all things Malawian.

Peter Mutharika: Lets promote our local products.

The Malawi leader said for a long time Malawians have not believed in local products and services. He said this has undermined national confidence and broken national pride and dignity.

“Who will believe in our products if we the owners cannot believe in them and how can we become an exporting nation if we don’t believe in our products. This is time for us to embrace our locally made goods and services,” he said.

Mutharika then described the Buy Malawi Strategy as a platform through which the country would improve its investment opportunities, change business strategies, create jobs and facilitate increase exportation of goods.

Mutharika said: “Through this strategy, we want to stimulate local production, promote the spirit of industrialization, create competitiveness and create more jobs that will in-return create wealth for the country.

“We expect to improve our foreign exchange base as importation of goods is expected to drop down.

“We are driving in foreign direct investors who will be part of local industry. Besides, we are creating a convincing and conducive environment by making our laws, policies and energy supply ideal for the purpose.”

  15. Our president is going kuku (insane).
I am sure his suit he is wearing is made in Malawi.
What happened to freedom of speech they preach when they are about to be elected into power – point of correction- he was handed over the power.

The next thing we are going to hear is you should marry each other.

  24. And did he indeed “order” or he encouraged? I wish to listen to the verbatim recording of the speech. I dont believe the president in his infinite wisdom can order people to wear a certain regalia

  25. Only if Malawi start to make good quality clothes and stop importing the chitenje cloth. Because apparently it doesn’t make sense cause Malawi still imports cloth making materials e.g ulusi, singano, nsalu.. Which by the end makes a Malawi made shirt or cloth more expensive than an imported shirt but then of low quality n poor design…. So I’m still wearing the imported ones unless otherwise!

    1. you right, Change is vitual, if we want malawians to buy local products, they should be high quality, and resonable price, people should afford, we should regulate and monitor all locally manufacturing companys, I think every malawian wants to wear good quality home made chothes!!!!!

    3-lncentives for manufacturing industries.

Start with our embassy staff outside Malawi and your entire delegation when you are on foreign trips.

And the like to the other areas and sectors i hope that gonna be a good move for the development of our struggling country.

  51. Ndiye ayambe iyeyo setting the example.Lets not see him wearing custom tailored suits

  52. Mr president and mr vice president should deliver this message to their barbie doll wives who so much lack confidence in their own african woman appearance. Certainly, the facial uplifts and colouring and their white woman’s hair are discustingly unmalawian and terribly influence on our young girls. Mama Ethel and Mama Patricia Shannil did a lot to promote ‘the Malawian chitenje or chilundu’; thereby promoting business at David Whitehead.and thereby developing the local clothing industry (tailors).

  53. Its a good idea but has to start with our president himself so sa we all emulate from him being our leader.

  54. ndiyamikire pamenepa bwana apm. bola kupanga enforce zimenezi osangoyankhula. kudos
