Zomba Changalume Member of Parliament (MP) John Chikalimba has asked government to provide bags of maize in the district’s Admarc depots in order to reduce maize shortage in the area.

Chikalimba made the remarks in the constituency when well-wishers donated 1,000 bags of flour worth K3.5 million to residents.

The MP thanked the well-wishers for the donation saying it has come at the right time.

He also urged government to provide maize in the area since the Admarc depot in the community has had no maize for the past three weeks.

On his part, group village headman Ntintha said traditional leaders in the area are concerned about the hunger crisis that has affected residents.

He said heavy rains recently destroyed crops in the fields hence there is no hope that the maize crisis in the area will end soon.

One of the beneficiaries, Wingo Mateya, encouraged residents to plant crops that do well in dry spells. He said crops such as potatoes, cassava and many others should be planted during the dry spell season.
