DPP members issuing death threats to opposition party leaders

Opposition leaders who have guns on and been heavy critics of President Peter Mutharika are being told they will be killed if they persist with plans to oust the Malawi leader.

The revelations have been made by People’s Party (PP) Publicist, Ken Msonda in an interview with Malawi24 on Friday.

Msonda said that he alongside Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera, PP Acting Vice President Kamlepo Kalua have fallen into the radar after they were dubbed as the sole people standing against the leadership of. Mutharika.

At a public rally last week the Malawi leader surprised people by borrowing the ideology of the ‘Nilibe Pulobulemu’ song.

‘’Recently during the opening of third phase of Chipembere Highway DPP regional governor for the South Hon Charles Mchacha told the state President that some opposition political party leaders in the name of Rt Hon Rev Dr. L. Chakwera, Rt Hon R. Msowoya, Hon Kamlepo Kalua and Hon Ken Msonda are the only people in Malawi who are against the leadership of DPP administration.

“That was primitive politics aimed at inciting DPP members to rise against the mentioned opposition political party leaders. At the moment our lives are at stake, a we are leaving in fear, receiving threats from anonymous people calling themselves DPP members,’’ Msonda told this reporter.

During the week past week, some Northern Region chiefs, in their backing of Mutharika, wondered why the opposition only focus on criticising without offering solutions to the said problems.

Msonda however claimed that the opposition has offered solutions to the DPP leadership but the ruling party just “doesn’t listen”.

‘’We have always played our oversight role to offer checks and balances so that the current administration delivers as per people’s expectations. We have passed two previous budgets, told government to speed up the K90bn and K577bn cashgate cases and bring to book those involved without looking at ones political, tribal or regional affiliation. We have tried to offer solutions to the current administration but we have a very arrogant administration that does not take advice from the opposition. Instead of adhering to the advice offered the DPP administration is busy arresting and intimidating the opposition,’’ He said.

Efforts by this reporter to get DPP’s reaction to this proved futile as party spokesperson Francis Kasaila did not pick his phone after several attempts on Sunday evening.

Recently, a grouping of chiefs lashed out on the opposition for failing to help towards the development of this country by only blaming the government without providing solutions to the problems at hand.

The revelations by Msonda come after three of MCP’s officials were netted over their miscellaneous involvements in a feared coup plot against Mutharika; something which some section of the society said was aimed at silencing critics.

Mutharika is being called upon to resign by the opposition due to the continued depreciation of the Malawi Kwacha and the current hunger situation which the Mutharika led government claims to be in control of.
