The Malawi Government through the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining says it will continue to impose heavy punishments against manufacturing companies which are making thin plastics.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Sangwani Phiri said some companies are still manufacturing thin plastics despite government banning the plastics.
He further added that the ministry’s aim is to end the manufacturing, distribution and selling of thin plastics in the country.
Phiri said the ministry will continue conducting inspections to make sure that companies are not distributing and selling the banned plastics.
Two weeks ago, government, through the Department of Environment and Climate Change Management, fined Poly Pack Limited, OG plastics Limited, Aero Plastic Industries Limited and Anchor Industries limited K1 million each for distributing and selling thin plastic papers.
Phiri however said the ministry has observed that the four companies are now complying with government’s ban on selling and distributing thin plastics.
