Govt trash calls to end Malata-Subsidy Programme

The Malawi Government has trashed suggestions made by some Members of Parliament (MPs) that the President Peter Mutharika administration should discontinue the Malata-Cement subsidy programme.

Member of Parliament for Dowa East Richard Chimwendo proposed in Parliament that the Malata-Cement subsidy must be replaced with agricultural loans which will be given to farmers.

”We have come for budget review and government has reduced the budget, we are asking government to take the money they use for the Malata-Cement subsidy and replace it with agricultural loans which will be given to farmers,” said Chimwendo.

Chiumia, says the programme is helpful.

He added that some beneficiaries of the program are selling the materials while others are receiving inadequate materials and corruption is also involved.

However, government’s deputy leader in Parliament house Grace Chiumia said it is shameful that those who represent poor people are advocating for the programme to be discontinued.

“It is unfortunate that some MPs are suggesting that the Malata-Cement Subsidy program should stop as the program was meant for poor Malawians,” said Chiumia.

She added that the MP’s live luxurious life with good houses and ending the program will be a heavy blow to poor Malawians.

Chiumia then asked the Members of Parliament to stop politicising government programmes and to be human.

She also claimed that people are appreciating the program including those in her constituency.

  4. No one would really condem this programme… but.. we need to prioritise which areas should we really spend on as a government. Doing the same good things at the wrong time is wrong even if not criminal. This programme could be halted.. to reallocate resources ti more burning needs. Even people who build houses by themselves take long to finish. May be poti mukuti mulibe pulobulemu… but some things are really bad out here. You may not see problems because naturally life has separated you from them.

Progrm iyi siya anthu osauka chifukwa anthu akumangiridwa manyumbao ndioti azabwezanso ndalama. Zili ngati loan which means thse pple can afford to build such houses on their own. Koma chifukwa cha ndale saimitsa bcoz kumbali yao this is part of campaig. But i wonder how many pple are benefiting from this program. They better abolish it. May be mps will do something since funds for this program goes to parliament for approval.
