Three arrested over stolen equipment

Malawi Police officers in Neno district are keeping in custody three men in connection with stolen equipment worth over K10 million from Mpatamanga falls in the district.

arrestedThe district’s police publicist, Raphael Kaliati, identified the suspects as 22 year-old Migeli Luke, 22, John Chikoti, 22, and businessman Fanuel Dafred, 41. According to the spokesperson, Luke and Chikoti together with other suspects who are still at large stole the equipment on February 25.

Kaliati said the suspects dismantled machines at the power plant and they stole some parts of the machines. He added that two water pumps, the main power generator, two batteries and some other spanners were stolen as well.

He said police later launched a manhunt looking for the thieves and netted the two on Monday.

The criminals disclosed that they had the sold the equipment to Dafred who is a businessman in the district. The three are expected to appear before court soon after investigations where Luke and Chikoti will answer charges of stealing while Dafred will answer charges of buying stolen items. Luke and Chikoti hail from Neno while Dafred hails from the area of Traditional Authority Kamenya Gwaza in Dedza district.
