The Nkhunga first grade magistrate court in Nkhotakota has sentenced two men to three-and-a-half years in prison with hard labour each for trafficking Indian hemp.
The duo, Patrick Sopa Mana, 32, and Gift Kapalamula, 25, were arrested on 24 February by police at Dwangwa in the lakeshore district after the law enforcers found them in possession of the restricted drug.
Publicist for Nkhunga police station sub-inspector Laban Makalani explained that the convicts were intercepted with the drug at a roadblock in Dwangwa.
”A team of police officers led by detective assistant superintendent Frank Makwalo placed a roadblock on the M5 road and this led to the arrest of the men who were found with five bags of chamba in their vehicle,” said Makalani.
In court, magistrate Kingsley Buleya expressed concern over the increase in cases of Indian hemp trafficking in the area, saying it has deterred development of the area and the country as a whole.
”This malpractice has posed a threat in our societies whereby there is an adjustment in the rate of criminal offences prevailing within our vicinities thereby making this area prone to violence and other uncalled for behaviours,” said Buleya.
Buleya then sentenced the two to three-and-a-half years in prison or to pay a fine of K100,000 each.
Kapalamula hails from Mbuna village in the area of T/A Kanyenda in the district while Mana comes from Machinjiri village in the area of T/A Machinjiri in Blantyre.
