Peter Kumpalume
Kumpalume: Blames health workers for drug shortages.

Kumpalume made the remarks in the national assembly when he was reacting to concerns by parliamentarians who had noted that the problem of drug shortage in the country’s hospitals has not been resolved.

Kumpalume explained that the ministry’s efforts are not bearing fruits due to some health personnel who steal drugs from public hospitals.

According to Kumpalume, the ministry used some of its allocation to procure drugs which have since been distributed to various hospitals across the country.

On patients’ meals, Kumpalume said they have tried to make sure that patients should receive two meals a day, which he said is going well in all district hospitals except in Mulanje.

However, People’s Party financial spokesperson in the house Ralph Jooma insisted that drugs are still not available and asked the ministry to at least procure important drugs so that they should be available in hospitals.

  3. Indeed I have to agree with the minister that some healthworkers r stealing these Gvt drugs on the xpense of the beneficiaries.A lot of healthworkers have been arrested but not convicted and a lot of them are back working.there need to be stiffer penalty when a healthworker is caught doing this malpractice. To my amazement those who have been convicted r those small fish who only r caught steal 100 to 200 tablets of drugs while those who r caught stealing a hole lot of delivery vehicle are scout free. Others working in health facilities pharmacies r stealing too much to the knowledge of their district pharmacy supervisors and DHos . Something thing has to happen fast to curb this malpractice

  6. Dr Kumpalume, …..but health workers are defeating the efforts…. is not the way you should reported the matter. In other ways, having noted the drug theft in hospitals by your own medical personnel, what are you doing about it? If you fail to provide a convincing answer, then there is no theft at all but an economic problem. If what you are saying is true, in this digital world, are you sure there are no computerised systems that could be used to arrest that as is the case with IFMIS? Dr Kumpalume, I mean you Dr Kumpalume, why are you insulting your own children in the ministry? Why are you putting them to shame? If they down tools demanding names of medical personnel engaged in drug theft, will you provide names? Be objective, Dr Kumpalume, my learned Minister of Health!

  14. this is obvious, dont expect teachers to be responsible for drug shortages in hospitals. on another note, do you know that most drugs found in the private pharmacies are stollen from government hospitals. there are incidents where by medical personnel reffer patients to specific pharmacy shops to buy medicins
