Consumer rights body asks Malawians to reject electricity tariff hike

Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) has asked Malawians to support it in its quest to force Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) to reverse its decision to raise electricity tariffs.

Executive Director for Cama John Kapito said concerned citizens should come in and support it with finances to be used for legal fees.

He added that the case is important as it aims to force Mera and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) to reverse their decision on the hike.

”Consumers are challenging the higher tariffs especially on the increase and this is unfair as there have been too much blackouts so the hike is not justified,” he said.

In December 2015, Escom with approval from Mera increased electricity tariffs by 30.6 percent; a month after Mera had also allowed Escom to raise tariffs by 13.7 percent.

This prompted Cama to take the two bodies to court saying the electricity supplier has failed to deliver most of the performance indicators necessitating further power hike.

  11. As raising electricity tarrif is justifiable to them but its not to us because a lot of things/comodities prices has gone up but our salaries remains stagnant. Its killing us alot !look we r failing to feed our families bcoz local mkt s maize is very xpensive. Look at sugar ,bread and other necessities,they r xpensive .Now talk of electricity has gone up twice if not thrice last year and once this year,that’s suicidal.

  39. We don’t know what CAMA does to help us, consumers, because it seems to us that Escom will raise its tariffs every time it wants, as it has been doing all along. How many times have the tariffs risen in the past six months? Where were the John Kapitos that time?

  45. There’s no consumerism in Malawi. What we see is just a semblance of it. Since its inception Cama has achieved nothing to write about. Malawians are getting raw deals every day from businesses in many forms ranging from poor quality, exorbitant prices to poor service and nothing is done by Cama. Not even just to mobilise consumers to rise up against these unfair business malpractices. What Kapito doesn’t know is that he isn’t at Cama to popularise himself. If he thinks so, then he better join his fellow Lhomwebelt folks.
