People in Thyolo district the stronghold of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), have resorted to stealing from estates in order to survive the current hunger.
Police in Thyolo made the revelations in a report on crime rate in the district. According to the report, crime has increased in the district as they have reported 163 criminal cases during the month of January alone compared to 116 during the same period in 2015.
Thyolo District Officer in Charge, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tereza Nankhuni said among factors largely contributing to the rise in crime is hunger.
She said people in the district are stealing macadamia nuts from surrounding estates as residents are resorting to cooking the nuts for survival.
Nankhuni further said that police have also made many arrests as a result of subsidized fertilizer which has become the fastest lucrative commodity on the illegal market.
The police however said the rise in crime in the district should be no cause for alarm since it has only reenergized officers to work even harder.
said Nankhuni : ‘We have so far managed to put in place strategies which have started to show progress. For example we are mainstreaming information sharing and reporting of criminal as well as civil cases, conducting of 18 sensitization meetings and revamping of Community Police Forums which are being very resourceful in the apprehending on of criminals.”
