Malawi24 has reliably been informed that the Malawi Police have been issued with orders not to allow anyone to see opposition parliamentarian, Jessie Kabwila, who was arrested yesterday for treason.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Dedza East, Juliana Lunguzi, revealed that officers at Kanengo Police Station denied them access to see the detained Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

“Police at Kanengo say they’re under orders not to allow anyone to see Kabwila” tweeted Lunguzi.

Kabwira, who is also MP for Salima North West parliamentarian was charged in absentia yesterday before her arrest. She joins, Ulemu Msungama, another MCP member who was arrested on Sunday.

Parliament Legal Affairs Committee’s chairperson and MCP’s legal advisor, Peter Louis Chakhwantha, is also in custody on same charges as the current regime races against time to round up dissidents calling for President Peter Mutharika’s resignation.

The three are accused of plotting to stage protests similar to the ‘Arab spring’ with the aim of ousting President Mutharika. Their charges are founded on a thread of WhatsApp messages where they are said to have tabled their discussions.

Renowned activists, Rafiq Hajat and Billy Mayaya have all lambasted government for move. Hajat said the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has “opened a veritable Pandora’s box”. Mayaya described the arrest as politically motivated.

As of press time, the police were yet to reveal where they were keeping Kabwila.
