Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu says the association’s disciplinary committee will handle December 12 elections case in which three candidates obtained a court injunction to hold the polls over anomalies in the voters registration process.

Presidential hopefulls Wilkins Mijiga and Willy Yabwanya as well as Tiya Somba who was vying for the first vice president seat, obtained a court injunction following the violation of Article 22 (1)  which stipulates that the list of 36 names of the affiliates be sent to FAM General Assembly at least 15 days before the date of the Assembly.

The injunction which resulted in the delay of the polls, was then vacated by the association’s legal team but FIFA envoy Ashford Mamelodi advised FAM to take action against those who took the issue to court.

“If it does not do so, FIFA will be disappointed,” said Mamelodi soon after the polls in December last year.

Speaking soon after the Fa’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), Nyamilandu said the disciplinary committee will handle the case by giving parties involved a fair hearing.

“I won’t interfere because I am also an interested party but the disciplinary committee will handle the case by giving a fair hearing to those involved,” he said.

From the three candidates, it is only Somba Banda who is actively involved in football as he is the current treasurer for Super League of Malawi (Sulom) but his administration career in football might hit a snag if he is found guilty in the on-going saga. However, he denied being part of the plaintiffs.

“Firstly, I want to set the record straight that I did not sign for that injunctions. I also learned about it while here. I only launched a complaint with the appeals committee which they ruled in our favour so there was no need to obtain a court injunction,” he said.

FIFA statuses do not allow football issues to be dragged to ordinary courts.

  4. This committee will not perform well since nyamilandu is already in the chair. It could world if the voters were null and void. am sure all the members of the committee will back Nyamilandu because is the one who have instated the committee to sort out the matter. Please you better stop to misuse the funds. The funds should go for other activities not that we shall look all as mad people if the committee approves Nyamilandu as a winner.
