Youths from villages of Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje district have pledged to plant more trees on Mulanje Mountain to restore the deforested massif.
The remarks were made by Chambe Youth Network Chairperson John Gamabatula after a tree planting exercise the group conducted.
Gambatula said they decided to plant trees on the mountain to conserve the mountain which is also one of the country’s most important tourist attractions.
According to Gambatula, they plan to plant 1,000 trees on the mountain and hundreds in catchment areas. He further said that they intend to plant in the catchment areas in order to help prevent floods.
The group hopes the tree planting activity will also encourage well-wishers to support them.
