Government says it has run into serious problems such that it is failing to distribute maize to Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) selling points.

According to minister of agriculture, irrigation and water development Allan Chiyembekeza, government does not have the capacity to distribute maize since it is running three programmes concurrently.

Chiyembekeza; we have run into serious problems

“We have tried as much as possible to make maize available to most of the selling outlets but we have run into serious problems.

“We have faced challenges to make the maize available as three programs are running like the Farm Inputs Subsidy program (FISP), humanitarian response through WFP all competing with the number of transport we have,” he said.

He however claimed that government has close to 50,500 metric tonnes of the staple grain available in ADMARC depots countrywide and there is also and 60,000 metric tonnes in its strategic grain reserves for humanitarian response.

Chiyembekeza said the maize is enough to feed Malawians up to the next harvesting period in April if there will be no disturbances from vendors who buy more maize.

However, as the minister was making the announcements from the comfort of a conference room in the capital city, Malawians were reportedly still queuing at Admarc depots across the country trying to access the staple grain.

  19. Malawi has very high maternal mortality rates and high unwanted pregnancy rates. This is because many people lack maternal and reproductive health information. Walter Moyo and colleagues developed “Maternitech”, a mobile phone app that: 1) provides complete info on contraceptives (what they are, how they work, side effects etc); 2) provides complete info on pregnancy issues during all the nine months 3) predicts delivery date of pregnant women, enabling them to prepare for delivery. Our app is now in the semifinals of the TNM app challenge. Please vote for our app to win this challenge and to allow our women to have safe pregnancies. Vote by sending an SMS written: SS4 to the number: 575. Voting is FREE of charge, doesn’t use any airtime (although it may warn you of charges). Those without TNM numbers can vote online at: http://smartchallenge.tnm.co.mw/index.php Then select “smart student category” then vote for “Walter Moyo Maternitech”. On SMS you can vote as much as you want per day. Whether 5, 10, 20 or even 100 times. Vote for this app and help women have access to important information right on their phones!

  20. Malawi @ 52 failing to distribute maize to all selling points. What a shame!!The problem lies with you top officals..You always want to give contracts to your companies, friends, relatives or else to those that have give something behind closed doors..This is why you are having this problem now.If I may ask:Would you mean to say that Malawian transportors do not have the muscle to transport that maize to the required destination. The answer is obviously”NO”You are the same ones destributing FISP materials,WFP materials, now maize distribution to virous selling points. How on earth can you manage to do all these @once with the condition of your vehicles? Apasenikoni anzanuwo, dyera ili chepesani anthu akufa mmidzimu…
