Giddes Chalamanda; To live his dream.

His fantasies about the looks of the United States of America (USA) may not only be done in the song Buffalo Soldier, but he would love to live the dreams. For Malawi’s acoustic music icon Giddes Chalamanda it would do him no harm to see the ‘good life’ he fantasised in the song.

The 86 year-old, who has been performing for over 50 years and has previously performed in Germany, is expected to be on a tour to the US, dubbed ‘Giddes Coming to America Tour’.

Addressing the press on Friday in Blantyre, Chairman of the team that is behind the tour, Wilkins Mijiga said that they saw it befitting to help Giddes whose songs like Linny keep enjoying airplay on local radio live his dream.

According to Mijiga, the tour which will also see the inclusion of the acoustic duo of Edgar ndi Davis as well as Msati Mseke hit maker, Patience Namadingo will help expose Malawi’s talent to the outside world.

While arguing that the tour will also be a way of promoting Malawi’s tourism to the world, Mijiga noted that the musicians will have an opportunity to show to the world how good and interesting Malawian art is.

‘’The tour will not only brand Malawi as a land of peace and freedom, but it will also put the country on the map. It will be worth noting that our creative products will be shown through the artists that we are sending to perform in the US,’’ he said.

He then revealed that the tour will cost them a whopping $32,000 (about 25 million Malawi Kwacha) which will be raised through a number of fundraising shows in the offing as well as from the corporate world and well-wishers.

‘’The crew will host several gigs in the USA on this tour. It will also conduct workshops on Malawi’s performance dubbed ‘Malawi Nights’ and interact with Malawians living in the US, the crew is therefore calling on all corporate and individuals to take advantage  of this shinning galaxy to market their brands to both Malawians living in the US and Americans interested to come to Malawi,’’ disclosed Mijiga.

According to the team of the organizers whose Patron is the Blantyre City Mayor, Noel Chalamanda and also includes renowned lawyer Gift Mwakhwawa , the artists will perform in the US on July 6, which is also Malawi’s Independence Day.

In a quest to fundraise for the tour, the artists are slated to perform in Blantyre on March 4 and in Lilongwe on the next day at yet to be named venues.

Speaking at the briefing, Namadingo was quick to express joy over the tour.

‘’You see while Giddes is living his dream, I will also be living mine. It’s my hope that the tour will help us get exposed to the world and market our nation in US.

The team has since urged well-wishers who want to help the tour for Chiradzulu based Chalamanda and the other artists to come in to make the trip a reality.
