Pupils learning under a rock in Kasungu

A picture of pupils learning under a rock in Kasungu has been making rounds on social media.

In the picture, a teacher is teaching standard five students at Katope School in the district; the pupils are seated on their desks while a big rock provides them with shelter.

For many social media users, the picture is representing the problems students in schools across the country face.

Malawi24 understands that the school does not have enough classrooms, a situation that forces the teachers to use a cave as a classroom.

A concerned parent from the area told Malawi24 that the problem at the school has been there for a decade. She said the issue has been reported several times to government officials but no action have been taken so far by authorities.

“I come from the area, the problem of classrooms and teachers have been here for ages. We tried several times to report it but nothing has been done. Though it looks funny but our kids are not safe learning under the rock,” she said

Katope School is in Traditional Authority Wimbe in Kasungu district under Livwezi Zone, Central East Education division. The school is close to Kasiya Trading Centre.

  10. This is very embarrassing so disturbing. We need to do something chonde abale anzanga imwe..Now how do we define development. Now here is my idea. we need functional constructive decentralized system in Malawi. We need to strengthen the village development concept i.e. Villages under Group Village Chief coming together and formulate action plans across all sectors -education, water, health, communication etc. The plans must be documented and displayed at district council offices for action. Investment plans must be made functional district level including financial mobilisation plans. Up the ladder we need Area Development Plans – large projects which will required either the District Assembly or Member of Parliament to act!

  19. Are these pupils not ensnared in a diwa-like fashion? Malawi at 50! Yet the lunatic of the president buys a mobile toilet to ……..

  20. To be more honest these problems can never be defeated, because birth rate is definitely higher than rate at which development is going ; take it or leave it, but trust me this is a fact…

  21. Kkkkkkk koma diwa limeneli litati lagwa lingakole ana angati?Do we Malawians still need aid from other nations?yet we have our own billionaires that failling to support the country but 2steal from the government. And we malawians we must stop critisising the government coz if there is someone stealing cement for some development in our areas we r the same people that we can need 2buy than to make him/her 2b arrested after all u say government is not delever u4get u r the one that making development not 2happen in ur area so wake please everybody must take responsibility to develop our motherland!

  26. 29. We, people are the most valuable resources for the government, no matter what your status is in the country, and government doesn’t exist without us people. Hence, looking up to government for everything its just as the same as looking up to ourselves..i.e..blaming ourselves. Peter Mutharika will not come into our villages and start moulding bricks for school block.

#Mobilise yourselves there in Kasungu, and build the classroom block, and government will send you teachers.

  30. mwana wakwanu ndiye oyambilira kulumidwa, mp ngati akukula mtima kunyumba yamalamulo uganiza anthu amuthandize chifkwa choti ndi mfiti.

  31. If true, then this community is backward and full of laggards. It is time to rise and develop our own communities. That is not a condusive environment for effective teaching and learning. My fellow parents let us rise and be proactive in preparing the futures of these children.

  32. asakunamizeni ai mtola nkhani amene amalemba anali ataledzela kachaso paja mudziwa umoyo wakukasungu akungofuna kuti inu mukuwelenga muzisangalala ndikulemba ma comment kukusungu kulibe school yomwe ana amaphuzila kusi kwamwala kapena kuti ku phanga ndie nda fisitu.

    1. ur a waste of living thing! community must mould the bricks then ask the government to provide the rest. by the way where is the mp for that wad? did he take the problem to parliament or he just seat phwwii in the house?

    2. Atsogoleri onse omwe alamula dzikoli bwanji sadamange zipinda zophunziriramo? Kungozolowera kuloza munthu zala basi. shupit!

    3. First Parent Teachers Asociation{PTA} ward Councillor,Chiefs n’Member of Parliament mst report there prblms then gvmnt will take aside that we Call Mphamvu ku Wanthu,Kuphunzira pansi pa Mtengo kapena pa Mwala zinatha Nthawi ya A Samunda!

  36. What is the community doing? In other places, the communities are moulding bricks, and gather sand, then the government or other NGOs when approached, they provide Cement and building materials for the classroom.

Where is the parents/teachers association, and what are they doing there? Wake up, times for 100% free community developments are over these days in African economy.

These days communities have to start their own projects from scratch and look for funding from both public and private sector!!!!!

    1. Sure #Lonjezo, we are the resources for the government, and government doesnt exist without people. Hence, looking up to government its just as the same as looking up to ourselves..i.e..blaming ourselves. Peter Mutharika will not come into our villages and start molding bricks for us.
