Chinese businessman held for tax evasion

Arrested.The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), last week seized bales of Zitenje belonging to a Chinese businessman who had attempted to evade tax.

According to the tax collector, officials intercepted a truck carrying 357 bales of Zitenje at Lirangwe Roadblock in Blantyre.

MRA’s Marketing Communications Manager, Wilma Chalulu, said the businessman,  Xue Jue Xiang based in Limbe, tried to evade duty of K16.9 million by declaring his consignment as ladies waist garments.

All the 357 bales have been seized pending payment of the taxes and a penalty by the businessman.

MRA has since warned all business people and the general public that misdeclaration, undervaluation or smuggling of goods is illegal and once caught, offenders will be punished in accordance with the law.

Misdeclaration is contrary to Section 135 of the Customs & Excise Act and it is punishable under section 142 of the same Act.
