Malawian veteran artist Wambali Mkandawire has praised Piksy’s Kora Awards nomination describing it as “very important.”

Piksy real name Evans Zangazanga was nominated for the Kora Awards in the category of Best Male – Southern Africa for his work on “Moto” which is off his second album “Mnthunzi”.

Wambali, who is not a stranger to awards and plaudits, says the nomination is no mean feat for the musician and he urged him to enjoy his experience as a nominee.

“I say congratulations to him. This nomination is very important, enjoy the whole experience. However, if I had met him I would have said it is very important that you should not go there thinking I should win I should win, because all those guys by being nominated it means they are good. If someone wins it, he deserves it,” Wambali said.

The award winning musicians also said that the nomination means that Malawian artists are doing impressive work. He mentioned musicians such as Lawi and Tay Grin as some of the artists who are making good music.

He said: “It means music in Malawi is developing. There are a lot of young people who are doing amazing work and so without even mentioning awards I think they are doing great work. This is just endorsing whatever they have been doing, we expect more.”

Piksy has become the first Malawian urban musician to be nominated for the award. He is however the third Malawian to be nominated for a Kora Award after Wambali in 2002 and Thoko Katimba in 2012.

To win the award, Piksy will have to beat competition from Angola’s C4 Pedro and Coreon Du, South Africa’s AKA, Zambia’s Petersen and Namibia’s Gazza.

The awards ceremony will take place on March 20 this year in Windhoek, Namibia.
