Malawi to have more airlines

A few weeks after low cost carrier Fastjet stopped its operations in the country, the Malawi  government has already started the process of replacing it.

Kasaila: There is light.

The Peter Mutharika led administration has invited airlines to come in the country and start their operations.

Speaking to the local media, Minister of transport and public works Francis Kasaila says they want more companies to do their businesses in the country in order to create competition among carriers.

”We are encouraging flight companies to come in and register with us and the existence of many flight companies will create competition to operators,” he said.

He however said that apart from Malawi Airlines, other carriers are not allowed to land at Chileka airport as its state cannot accommodate many airplanes for now.

Fastjet suspended its operations in Malawi due to sustained depreciation of the kwacha and the government’s refusal to give them an additional route to Blantyre.

The company said it would have continued its operations had Malawi allowed it to land at Chileka Airport.

But Kasaila trashed the allegations saying Fastjet pulled out because the company had low rates which could not sustain its operations.
