US gay rights envoy ‘not welcome’ in Malawi

The announcement that United States of America Special Envoy for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) persons will visit Malawi has not been received well by Malawians as the agenda behind the visit remains unknown.

As Malawi24 reported, America’s LGBTI envoy, Randy Berry, is expected to visit Malawi, Namibia, Botswana and South Africa starting this week.

However, Malawians have threatened that they will not peacefully welcome the envoy as there are speculations that he is coming to financially support homosexuality advocates in the country.

According to comments on the story this publication posted, Malawians are against the visit and there are reports that others have started campaigning against envoy’s coming.

One of the readers, Saeed Kalmov, through his comment asked God to intervene so that Malawi should remain with its cultural believes on the homosexuality.  

Said Kalmov: “We seek refuge to Allah from that satan who are coming from America to Malawi just because of gay rights. Tell them to go to hell those who advocate and funding that satanism right, Malawian people know that you are African people don’t let satan from America change your culture and your religion, Malawian people please wake up and chase him from the airport don’t let him to come into the country.”

Others asked government to cancel the visit saying it is of less importance to Malawi citizens.

Banyamulenge Kamozah Phiri wrote: Kodi dziko lathu lilibe mphamvu zolesera asatana amenewa kuti asalowe mdziko muno? I wonder these authorities just accept anything that comes in their country without barriers! Tatopa nazo izi pliz kumipandoko wonesani kuti muli ndi mphamvu zolesera nyansi kulowa dziko lanu!”

Others even threatened that they will hold demonstrations the moment the openly gay envoy sets his foot in the country.

“Koma why can’t we demonstrate on this issue. Its serious issue guys coz tikangolorera zimenezi nde tililakwira dziko lanthu la bata ndi mtendereli and onse anafera dziko lino kuti tipeze ufulu (John Chilembwe and his fellows) mizimu yawo ikwiya nafe abale. We can stand on our own like Zimbabwe kusiyana ndikuti we should depend on those who will bring nyasi mdziko lanthu,” wrote one of the readers, Chikondi Emmaculate Kuphata.

Collins Maulidi also liked the idea of protests and he wrote: Let them come, we will be at the airport to welcome them, and we will stone them right there, we are Malawians nobody should impose their culture here. We don’t need them.

Another reader, Dalitso Nkhoma said: Please tell him not to come otherwise we will do matching and stone him like a dog, for we have been saying No to Gaysim in our country but don’t need to listen please, why are you taking away our human rights when we say NO No not this nyasi into our country if Gaysim is human rights too.”

Alick Kumwenda however encouraged people to pray: Only talking in walls [Facebook wall] shall not help this Malawians, lets gather together and bow ourselves to our heavenly God and Pray that these may perish, their plan, their coming and their discussion may fail and be confused in Jesus mighty power name, and may their plane crash on their coming in Jesus name.”

During his visit, Berry is expected to engage in meetings with government officials, civil society representatives and members of business, academic, and faith-based communities.
