Malawi Police in the northern region district of Nkhatabay have rescued an 80 year-old man from drowning in the overflowing Limphasa River.

Malawi24 understands that the man, identified as William Zgambo, went to his maize field located on one side of Limphasa River where he wanted to scare away some monkeys which were destroying his crops.

While there, heavy downpours began and swelled up the river. The situation scared him such that he just decided to brave the flooding and cross the river using the bridge he had used when going to his farm.

Drowning“This just saw him losing his pair of trouser which was carried away by the fast moving water. When he sensed danger that he was drowning, he shouted for help and people who heard him came to help him out,” said the source.

However, by that time he had already been carried by the flooding waters such that the villagers failed to rescue him. This made them to contact the police who came with an engine boat and rescued the man.

Police publicist for the district sergeant Ignatius Esau has since confirmed the incident to this publication and said the man has hailed the police for rescuing him from death.

“When asked how he felt after being rescued, the old man vowed that he will never go to scare monkeys especially in times of rainy season because he believes it was by the grace of God that the Police managed to rescue him,” said Esau.

The man hails from Timbiri village, traditional authority Timbiri in Nkhatabay district.
