Escom Malawi load-shedding

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has revealed plans to use fuel generators for power supply in the country from the month of March.

The development follows persistent blackouts due to high demand of electricity from the public.

More blackouts in the offing.

Confirming the development, Escom public relation manager Kitty Chingota said the company is to produce 46 megawatts from the fuel generators.

Chingota further said that the company will decide strategic places where the generators will be located in all the regions of the country.

“Come March, we will be commissioning 10 megawatts in Lilongwe and 6 megawatts in Mzuzu, we hope that we will be producing 20 megawatts from Lilongwe as well as Blantyre,” said Chingota.

Chingota added that the project is meant to minimize power interruption in the country.

Escom has for a long time failed to meet the demand for power in the country and has always been forced to ration power supply through load shedding.

  4. Kkkkkk Bola solar pannel and there is no need for u to pay any bill to God for his sun but think about the fuel how munch are u going to spend on that?? And how many generators will u have??ths is end of the?…….. And english people will takeover the?……lets wait and see.

  5. Good develoment, keep it up ESCOM but also train the mentality of some people to learn not to loadshed un necessarily only when situations are bad. And those doing the load shedding must be accountable to what they do

  6. Nde palibe chanzeru pamenepa mpaka fuell generators Y ndalama zimenezo kugulira zipangizo zodalirika za Magetsi O kuonjezera malo opangira Magetsi using H2O amakanika kupereka Magetsi okwanira using water sources Nde akunganiza kut angalimbe kumapereka Magetsi okwanira using fuel ???? zoseketsa kwambiri

  15. IWE
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU ESCOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY DONT WE SPEND THE MONEY ON SOLAR POWER, AN ENTIRE FIELD OF SOLAR PANELS, it will add up to the same costs, and you wont have to buy fuel for the next ten years!!!!!!!! pls chonde, you guys must think wisely assaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

    !!

  16. Dziko lake liti? Mesa ndi ogwila ntchito omwewo angayambe kuba mafuta ogwirisila ntchito pa ma generator amenewo! Akungoyenela kungopeza njira ina osati imeneyo, ngati anthu amakwanisa kuba mafuta amu transfoma nanga bwanji mu generator?

  17. Hmmmmmm… Lol back to square one because that mode phased out some time back and we’re going back in this twenty first century. Kkkkkk… My Malawi…

  18. Kodi Malasha sangapange moto wa magetsi? Nanga nchifukwa chiani kukanilira zinthu zoti sizikuthandizani. Kodi palibenso macompagn ena moti angathe kubweresa magetsi awo a solar system

  20. The best solution is the president should reside in one house and serve billions of kwachas this country spend on state houses which should be used in buying powerful hydro electric equipment to add to the already existing ones and blackouts will vanish in a nightmare. Nuclear electricity is good but its expensive for Malawi to fund it. Firstly, nuclear electricity project is intensively funded and it requires military supervision and the problem with us malawians is that most of our soldiers in the MDF are undergraduates whom they dont know much physics as such govt has to send the whole MDF to xool to study physics again which is expensive for the govt.

    1. Physics and Chemistry is done at Secondary School. I did this up to Form four. Most of the Soldiers being recruited now are form 4 guys so what you writing here is not true. In colleges people specilise in different disciplines, you dont expect some one doing Economics and Accountancy to do Physics.

    2. Do u think nuclear theory mumapanga pa secondary xool ingafanane ndi nuclear plant yeniyeni? We are talking nuclear plant here not zamubukhu and u all think that with a knowledge ya msce someone can handle a nuclear plant. Nzeru zayinu nonse za ana. Go to china and japan u will find out that their military specializes in phyiscs.

  21. Where have you been all this time? I suggest escom doest know its demand projections? Yet somebody was employed to do this or you don’t have competent pepple to that. You bring in suggestions when the counrty has suffered. Escom is a shame.

  22. Nuclear energy is cheaper upon installation, is of higher performance is not affected by environmental changes and the addivantage being we have our own uranium which will just need purification to upper grades; unfortunately Malawi is in sleeping mode and ESCOM is now profit-oriented business.

  28. why not try solar or nuclear energy-it sounds like something cheaper than generators that will need fuel and the like, think about it

    1. Ledson Steven if you don’t understand things better ask. Nuclear is indeed expensive and we don’t have expertise. There are cheaper sources of energy than that…. check around.

    2. Lonjezo Bande, if rich nations use coal and not sollar why? You are poor but need expensive technology you can’t afford. Developed nations are rich bcoz of polluting the environment. Why should we be left in poverty when all nations are polluting. China, India and Brazil are investing heavily in coal plants to run their industries, to develop their economies why should Mw denied use of cheap energy.

  29. hehehehehe! oya then we have to expect power bill to rise up to 100 % increase…..mayiko ambili they are running away from using that method cos its too expensive ….

    1. Tonde Wadula,,,

The govt makes billions a day,,, from statutory corporations such as Escom, water board, MRA, Road Traffic, Coarts etc…
If the govt were to involve Malawi electrical engineering companies, like the one along M1 road near 6 miles roundabout in Lilongwe, to give the solution, am telling you, that could have been a long gone story.

The company I mentioned above manufactures electrical equipments and if they can be given a task to give remedy, surely, it can.

The Urenium (sp) we have at Kayerekera mine could also be used to make electricity,, the nuclear energy.

    1. Clean energy is expensive for africa. I visited one wind farm and they said it costs $45,000 for maintenance of one turbine/year. Coal is the cheapest energy worldwide. Highest %ge of energy source for developed nations is coal.

    1. Its not sustainable. We Malawians do care. But it appears escom does not have a planning department. Anybody can suggest what it should do the next two years and they give it a try. This can not take us anywhere.
