A 36 year-old Malawian woman, Elinati Nkaunda, has died while her husband has been admitted at Salima district hospital after a mud wall collapsed in a pit which they were digging while searching for granite in Salima district.
The death of Nkaunda is said to be the third in three weeks in the district after two other people died on 25 December last year due to a similar accident.
Salima police spokesperson Gift Chitowe said the deceased and her husband were among the people who are involved in small scale mining in search of granite.
He said people in the area of Chief Karonga and other surrounding areas do small scale mining with the aim of making money.
According to Chitowe, 2 grams of the stone can go at a price between K700 and K1000 depending on demand for the stone on a particular day.
Recently, the Malawi government said that they will start a mining project in the district.
