Ministry of agriculture vehicle kills two year-old in Nkhotakota

A two year-old girl has died in Nkhotakota after being hit by a motor vehicle as she was crossing the M5 road at Chamba village in the area of senior chief Malengachanzi in the district.

Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer, Sub-Inspector Williams Kaponda confirmed the accident in an interview with Malawi24.

He explained that the accident involved a motor vehicle Toyota Hilux registration BN 9134 belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture office in Nkhotakota.

During the accident the vehicle was being driven by Tchaka Chirwa, 36, of Kamtchayeni village in the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda in Nkhotakota.

Postmortem results conducted at Nkhotakota district hospital indicate that the toddler died due to severe head injuries.

road accidentThe incident is the second of its kind this year in the district. The girl hailed from Chamba village in the area of Senior Chief Malengachanzi in the district.

In a similar development, on January 8, a 25 year-old woman was killed after an Isuzu Van trailer registration number CEM 36588 got detached from a motor an Isuzu registration number CEM 35010 and hit the woman who was on the other side of the road.

According to Kaponda, the motor vehicle was being driven by Wilson Nthali, 33, and when it reached Amazoni village along Nkhotakota-Salima M5 road, the van got detached and hit a bicycle taxi which was carrying the deceased.

Police arrested the driver on charges of causing death in accordance with Road Traffic Act (RTA).

The driver who hails from Chimsindi village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Timbiri in Nkhata-bay is currently on court bail.

Salome John, 25, hailed from Mangulenje village in the area of Senior Chief Mwadzama in Nkhotakota.

  4. Parents lets take our total responsibility. While sometimes we can blame the driver but a two year old child is just too young. Anyway no single word can reverse the loss. RIP

  9. These things happen . I had an accident last year when i also hit an 8 year old child .. I have never understood why children as young as that are allowed to cross the road on their own . By the grace of God she survived . but i really think malawians do not fear cars as they should and the drivers are always held responsible for such , even thr police do not really look at circumstances but aslong as a person is hit then it becomes the fault of the driver no matter what .. something has to be done because it is usually these kids as young this getting hit on the road and nothing is done about it . so sad .
