Ward Councillors in Malawi have threatened to strike over government’s failure to provide a motorcycle loan as promised by President Peter Mutharika’s administration.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday morning, Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA) argued that government’s delay to provide the loans is unfair to councillors.

Ward Councillors want Mutharka (in suit) to give them loans.

MALGA Chairperson Samson Chaziya further called for a speedy process on the disbursement of the loan arguing that if government release the loans very late it will be hard for them to repay in time.

“We want government to be open on the mobility proposal we had earlier on, we want to know when we are to get the loan because we are being taken as failures due to mobility problem, our wards are too big, if we do not get the feedback all the councillors will take their blankets and sleep at capital hill,” said Chaziya.

Commenting on the development, Ministry of Local Government spokesperson Muhlabase Mughogho said government will approve the loans before the end of 2016.

The councillors want each one of them to be given a loan of K1 million to be used for buying motorcycles.

That is why this nation is failing to develop because of self-centred leaders who don’t put people’s needs as a priority.

  10. Give them bicycle loan period. We need money for medicine, maize and not these luxuries. Forsake.

  11. Idiot councillors. Getting a loan is not a right, just a privilege. You are crying for a loan while your people are dying of hunger, pali nzeru. Mfiti izi.
