Malawians want state funeral for Chibambo

Some Malawians have suggested that government should consider organizing a state funeral for one of the country’s freedom fighters Rose Chibambo who died on Tuesday.

They suggested this in random interviews this publication conducted across the city where people also found a chance to send their condolences.

Most of them did not hide their wish for government to honour Chibambo with a state funeral saying she contributed much to the freedom of this country.

“We hear her relatives are not interested in that but as Malawians we still believe that as someone who fought for our freedom, she deserves a state funeral,” said Vinjeru Njikho.

Another resident, Joshua Banda echoed the same while adding that freedom fighters deserve to have their own burial place for them so that they are easily recognized.

“Look at Chihana there, his graveyard is in mess as if he didn’t contribute much to our freedom. I believe that if such people are buried separately, they will never be respected and our children will not know about them,” he said.

However, some reports Malawi24 cannot confirm independently shows that her relatives seem to be arranging the funeral on their own.

When Chibambo was at Mwaiwathu Hospital, they refused any help from government saying they are capable of affording anything required for her treatment.

But government through the ministry of information announced its readiness in helping Chibambo in any way required.

“If they will need our help, we are ready to come in at any time,” said Jappie Mhango, minister of information.

 

Chibambo hailed from Kafukule in Mzimba district and was a member of C.C.A.P synod of Livingstonia.

    1. She was a freedom fighter alongside Chipembere, Chisiza, Chokani and a few others before 1964. Some or most of them including her, went into exile for about 30yrs! Did u know the cabinet crisis? U are the one who needs growin’ up!
