Education expert faults government for maintaining fees

An education expert in the country has criticized Malawi government’s decision to maintain school fees in public schools saying this will lower the quality of education in the country.

The education expert, Dr. Bob Chulu who is also a lecture at Chancellor College, said parents must take full responsibility of their children’s education if the country is to achieve quality education.

“For a long time government has been taking full responsibility on the operations of public schools but nothing has changed and now it’s time that parents take full responsibility of their children’s education,” said Chulu.

D. Chulu: We need change.

He further said that the motion moved by Parliament to stop the fees hike shows that the legislators truly represent people from their constituencies.

Chulu added that it is high time Malawians started helping government to fund the education sector in order to achieve good standard education.

Last year, government announced that it will raise fees in public school in order to improve the quality of education in the country.

However, Parliament passed a motion stopping government from going ahead with the hike after members had argued that most Malawians cannot afford to pay the new fees.

  2. It was the parliament. Peter wanted to respect the decision which parliament voted.
Otherwise, the same guys could have said Peter is filled with impunity. He disregards parliament.
Blame the opposition. How could we pay mk5000 as fees per term?
This is ridiculous guys. We can’t move forward.

  3. This so called education expert went to university during Kamuzu Banda’s time and his parents were not paying anything. Now that he is better off he wants some people to pay the high fees. Shame on you.

  10. Malawi24, Where and when was this said? The article does not tell! The whole story is based on these 3 statements that the expert allegedly made –

“now it’s time that parents take full responsibility of their children’s education….the motion moved by parliament to stop the fees hike shows that the legislators truly represent people from their constituencies…it is high time Malawians started helping government to fund the education sector in order to achieve good standard education”

This is contradictory and it is obvious you did seek to attain accuracy! You can’t write about something you don’t understand – 🙁

  11. Once upon a time pipo were paying eggs to get quality education, we had no money back then, wen did money becomes synonymous to quality education? We have changed the old good books with…… I rest my case

  12. ineso ndi expert nde hear this. the new fees did not look at al factors. how can schools that r supposed to get a monthly funding of K45000 giv the same amount to government as those that are given ova K1milion by the same govmnt? how can they collect 80% fees from open school?

  13. The fact that many/if not all top govt officials send their children to high xuls and xuls abroad denotes really poor education in Malawian xuls is real n the govt has practically no eagerness to uplift it to higher levels. So equality, justice, accountability and fairness are just songs in Malawi

  21. I doubt if Bob Chulu really granted an official interview with this newspaper. .or if he did, may be the writer has twisted facts. .Just see the contradictions in the article: in the first and last paragraphs the reporter says the education expert has faulted government for maintaining fees.but somewhere in the middle, its reported that the expert has nevertheless hailed mps for representing their constituents (by rejecting fees hike).. these two parallel thoughts in themselves render the expert being undecided on whether he is for or against fee hike.am sure Chulu is too good to be indecisive. And, the photo used, those who have seen Dr Chulu recently will agree that this is a very old photograph..While not trashing the report entirely, I am just being skeptical until I verify with him. .

    1. I also doubted sir timapageti tikumaika mawu anthu mkamwa

    2. Malawi24, If what Bob Chulu said was dauntingly complex for you, you could have tried to get your article verified by him – I believe he wouldn’t mind and would have appreciated your attempts at clarity!

  22. What kind of expert are u? maganizo odzikonda amenewo, this is malawi, the world’s poorest country ndie musatifananitse ndi america
