Armyworm attacks have been reported in Malawi’s old capital, Zomba district where 9 villages and 34 hectares of land have been affected.

District agricultural development officer for Zomba Peterson Kandoje confirmed the outbreak of the army worms which are locally known as ntchemberezandonda.

”At the moment we are working with farmers on the outbreak and 10 hectares have been controlled,” said Kandoje.

He further said they are meeting a challenge since some chiefs want to control the army worms using traditional means.

”We are meeting a challenge as farmers are not using the chemicals we are giving them as their chiefs are using Namulondola to control the army worms but it’s not working,” he said.

Kandoje added that farmers are desperate but they are scared to use the chemicals because their chiefs are using Namulondola.

The area that has been greatly affected by the army worms is Mpokwe Extension Planning Area (EPA) which borders with Phalombe district.

A few weeks ago, Phalombe district was reported to have been affected by army worms of which 60 hectares of land has been affected.

Army worms usually affect some parts of the country during the growing season and in 2010 nine districts were affected while 5,000 hectares of crops were destroyed.
