The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has demanded an independent forensic body to investigate fire that gutted a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) warehouse in the capital Lilongwe.
According to a preliminary report released by Malawi police, there was no foul play involved as the fire was “pure accident”.
Malawi Police Inspector General Lexten Kachama said he thinks the preliminary report gives a clear image of the main report.
“To be honest, it was pure fire, you know there were a lot of items like generators, papers that could easily catch fire, at this stage I don’t think the preliminary report will change,” said Kachama.
However, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has brushed aside the preliminary report and said the country should have an independent investigating body on the fire.
“That is very strange, this fire was politically motivated and we need to have an independent investigating body on the fire,” said Kabwila.
In one of several mysterious fires in the past three years, the MEC warehouse was burnt to ashes while there was a court battle over parliamentary results in Lilongwe City South East Constituency between Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and MCP candidates.
