Kalekeni: We need change.

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has lamented over the hard conditions teachers in the country have been going through for a long time which they say continued in 2015.

General Secretary for TUM Dennis Kalekeni said the teachers’ conditions are still harsh as they live in houses that are not well constructed and in some cases are far from the school.

He added that the there is still a high pupil to teacher ratio as there are many pupils for every teacher which is negatively affecting the quality of education in the country.

“In 2016 we are asking government to improve the quality of education in the country by improving the pupil teacher ratio,” he said.

Kalekeni further said that if the pupil to teacher ratio is to be improved government must recruit the teachers it trained and those who went to school to upgrade their education must be promoted.

He further said that government must make deliberate efforts to motivate teachers and it must make sure that the rural hardship allowances are motivating teachers.

  1. not only teacher everybody n the public service.z facing challenges kid kukwera kwa zithu kwakwerera aphunzitsi okha ‘abankha nonse

  2. Problem is that at the helm of this organisation is a person with primary teaching qualification as his highest paper hence, lacking the influence, muscle and voice to make the government moved or shaken. Isn’t this the right time for change of leadership?

  3. kaleken munthu ofoila kwambiri akadakhala mwana wake 2yrs kudikira postings akanamva bwanji? tatopa bola mutipatse ma certificate athu tizipi ku Mozambique

  4. Mr Kalekeni and your team are bad dead people. Infact I hate your bad leadership. Teachers are suffering and you are not concerned. You know the problems of teachers and you make that silly meaningless argument. You make noise when you know you will be given grades and money. I wish you were punished right away here on earth for the sins you are commiting. At the just ended AGM you discussed trash. All what you think is an increase on monthly contribution to 1% of ones salary. Stop dreaming that and start doing what you are expected. I hate the leadership of TUM.

  7. i doubt if the conditions will improve coz the economy is not showing signs of recovery. imagine we are starting a new year with a devaluation of kwacha. so i really doubt if conditions will improve and plus corruption at all levels of civil service. the problems will always be there.

  8. For the children to do well at school it needs a good teaching. How can parents expected there children to do well at school when teachers are facing problems of payment. Government must do something,we understand the condition of the government now.

  9. TUM needs to be headed by a brave person of ‘john kapito’ calibre, not only mouth-threatening denis kalekeni. You are shaming trs with your childish demands.

    1. He could have ordered trs to down chalk in a bid to force govt to recruit trs. Can this govt bow down to their demands with mere words? Kalekeni is well educated but lacks wisdom

Teacher is a very important employee though being mishandled in our country,u can talk of doctors, profesors, lawyers, engineers and wat have u,all these were once taught by a teacher. These trs will never fully deliver unless the welfare of them is looked into.It z so pity that the pioneers of every development in the country r given a peanut salary, thats y trs work as they earn.Go to zambia a teacher is well paid equivalent to 450 thousand mk a month, while in malawi trs are paid 68 thousand mk a month and u expect such employee to perform loooo!shame on peter and his led gvt! Moreover even the primary schools that started way back in 1900 have not yet been completed in terms of construction but politicians r busy exchanging de gvt,i dont think that dere z a primary school in malawi that was fully constructed, may be these foolish leaders know!
