The renovation of Chilomoni police station which was burnt down on June 21 this year by an angry mob in Chilomoni Township in Malawi’s Commercial city of Blantyre is in final stages and is expected to end next month.

According to the chairman of Chilomoni police taskforce, Chifundo Lingao, who was in the forefront encouraging people to reconstruct the police station, the project which started two months ago is progressing well.

“Right now we have managed to source materials to finalize the project. We already have roof metals and iron sheets. The next stage is putting the sheets, painting as well as putting up glasses which were broken.

“The whole project was supposed to end this month but was delayed due to the late coming of some materials  which made us to extend our projection date to January next year and I am sure  by next month the project will be finished,”  said Lingao.

Initially, the whole project was expected to cost K16 million but Lingao was reluctant to reveal how much they have so far spent due to the slow inflow of funds and some donations.

“Most of the materials were donated by well-wishers in the area. [We are] talking about the timber and iron sheets. So it would be difficult right now to put up the cost unless we go back to our project materials,” said Lingao.

Chilomoni police substation was burnt down together with some two vehicles and a motor cycle when some angry residents invaded the station after a person was found dead.
