Mighty Wanderers head coach Elia Kananji says the 2015 soccer season was fair to his side, which won Malawi’s Carlsberg Cup.

Speaking in the aftermath of his team’s 1-0 victory over Red Lions on Thursday which saw them climbing up to fourth in the standings, the former Blantyre United and Big Bullets coach hailed his side for a remarkable season both in the league and cup competitions.

“We won the Carlsberg Cup and finished as runners up in the Standard Bank Knockout Cup to Civo Service United and as you can see, we have finished in the top four of the Super League so it has been a fair season to us,” he said.

Kananji: Says the year was fair to Mighty Wanderers.

However, Kananji was quick to admit that his side struggled a lot in the early part of the second round.

“We were winless in the opening games of the second round and we were struggling a lot. But towards the end of our campaign, we won every match so the season was fair to us considering the fact that the team finished 9th in the league last season and won nothing,” he said.

Among Super League sides, Wanderers were the team to have invested in more players this season with 11 new players coming in but they still struggled a lot in the top flight.

However, finishing in the top four will be a sign of relief for the Lali Lubani boys following their disastrous second round campaign.

Injuries to Jabulani Linje, Rafiq Mussa and Francis Mulimbika and the sudden departure of Cameroonian Lionel Atsu as well as losing Muhamad Sulumba and Jimmy Zakazaka were a thorn in the flesh for the Nomads as they failed to put the ball into the back of the net in 5 consecutive second round matches.

Wanderers fans will be hoping for a successful 2016 season after finishing on a very high note.

  3. Its not fair to finish fourth because our team deserves second position but l believe what happened at the end of the season by winning all matches will carry on to the next season that spirit must grow,we must know that getting sponsors starts with winning at least a draw its better than a loss.
