Three army teams risk missing out on Standard Bank Cup

Having completed their Super League games this season, three Malawi Defence Force teams (MDF) risk missing out on next year’s Standard Bank Knockout Cup after finishing outside the top six.

The format of the cup only sees top six teams automatically qualifying for quarter-final slots whilst four teams are voted to battle it out in the preliminary round by the bank’s customers from which two teams proceeds to the quarter-finals.

Red Lions, Kamuzu Barracks and Moyale Barracks have all failed to make it into the top six, with Airborne Rangers relegated from the top flight.

This means that from the four army teams, its only Mafco FC who have automatically qualified into the cup having finished the season as runners up to champions Big Bullets.

As a result, the teams’ chances of taking part in the competition will depend on how the customers will vote.

The current defending champions Civo United have also failed to finish in the top six alongside Epac FC, Mzuni FC.

If the customers decides not to vote for the army teams, then it will only be Mafco FC taking part in the competition.

Having lost to Mighty Wanderers on Thursday, Red Lions have finished the season on 7th position with 41 points whilst Kamuzu Barracks might finish the season on 9th position with 36 points depending on Civo’s result against Big Bullets on Sunday. Civo’s victory will take them to 8th with 37 points.

As for Moyale, their goalless draw against Blue Eagles on Thursday saw them finishing the season with 34 points and just like Kamuzu Barracks, they might move to 10th position if Civo manages to beat Bullets on Sunday in their final game of the season.
