A bandwagon of Malawi’s former ruling People’s Party (PP) governors has joined the fired northern region provincial chairperson Christopher Mzomera Ngwira in endorsing Khumbo Kachali as interim president of the party.

Ngwira was fired from PP for proposing that the party should be led by Kachali following the absence of the party’s president Joyce Banda since 2014.

Banda: Not wanted.

Speaking to the local press, one of PP’s governors, Daniel Kaipa who is governor for Kasungu central, said Kachali should take leadership of the orange camp.

“The voice of the grassroots must be addressed, people need someone who can lead the party and in this case it is Khumbo Kachali who was fully elected at the party’s convention,” said Kaipa.

Kaipa further blasted the party vice president Uladi Mussa’s decision to fire Ngwira as provincial chairperson in the northern region.

Concurring with Kaipa, Ngwira said Kachali has leadership skills arguing that he has experience of politics in Malawi.

“I know Kachali as a person who has a lot of experience in Malawian politics, he has been there before us and he has power to unite people because he has worked with different people from all three regions,” said Ngwira.

However, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda continues downplaying reports of a leadership vacuum in the party.

  1. there must be a meeting to endorse whoever can be an interim leader,
Khumbo left the party when Joyce had taken Gwengwe as running mate, otherwise this party will not be there in 2019

  2. PP please do not give room to your opponents to destroy the party. This is not a new phenomenon to the Party. Leading by fear will tear apart the Party. Mr Ngwira is not wrong but the approach is disturbing. His proposals should have been tabled behind curtains. It is obvious the opponents are very steady to see the burial of the Party. The fears of the Party’s Leader are very obvious. And thus an advantage to the opponents because they will never cease to find shortfalls of the former Leader, that will not give room to your Party to reorganize the Party after the “heavy” fall. Put your heads together and support your Leader and come up with a solution to the leadership wrangle. The Party still has a Leader. It will be very difficult for the Party to perform well if you start changing Leadership now due to political cases arisen. My simple advice is stead up your tempers and sit down to sort out this mess. Mind you the ” mess” is external.

  3. Mr Ngwira Kachale anatuluka mu PP,ndiye akhala bwanji ogwilizira chipani chomwe anatuluka kale.basi konseko kufuna kutchuka kuti ku mpoto kuli president wa chipani kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.kodi paja inu ndi Khumbo anakukanani ku Dpp.shame mr Ngwira and Ur kachali wakuba mabedi ku mponera.

  4. mmmmh, the funny thing is that PP despite losing the elections it is a weak party and instead of resolving their disputes peacefully they are busy fighting among themselves. which will eventually sink the party. ask the once mighty AFORD in 1994 it won all the seats in the northen region but today it only has one seat in the parliament all bcoz of internal conflicts. come 2019 i dont know how many seats. PP might be heading towards the same direction. better aford had a base in north while PP has no place to say is its stronghold.

  14. It is true that Kachale was dully elected by the PP indaba to deputise the party. However, his position ceased immediately he dumped the party for DPP prior to the 2014 Tripartite Elections.

He went further to rally behind APM and wholesomely tipped and backed Prof Peter for victory and eventually APM rigged and won.

The pragmatism here is as simple as reciting the letters of the Alphabet in as much as he is now a mere member in the Orange den.
