Save the Children says the number of malnourished children in the country is alarming and this is negatively affecting the education sector.
Senior manager responsible for communications at Save the Children, Elvis Sukali, said this in Mwanza where the organisation wanted show the effects of malnutrition on children.
He said despite efforts by government to end malnutrition in the country there is still a high percentage of children who are malnourished in Mwanza and the country at large.
”The problem of malnutrition is a big problem in the country as Mwanza has 47 percent of stunted children which is against the country’s total population,” said Sukali.
He further said that the Millennium Development Goals Endline Survey of 2013 shows that the national rate of stunted children has moved from 47 percent to 42 percent of the country’s children, which he says is a big proportion of stunted children. Sukali added that they are proposing to check budget tracking at district level to make sure that resources reach people to end malnutrition.
He said Save the Children wants to hold government accountable for the commitments it made at the Nutrition for Growth summit in London which are aimed at ending malnutrition by 2020.
Malawi it seems not serious on children’s health
The ministry of health should put much effort on sencetising people on 1000 special days especially in remote areas where malnutrion is very high.
