Government has warned that it will arrest vendors who buy maize from Agriculture Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) and later sell it to poor Malawians at a higher price.
Minister of information, tourism and civic education, Jappie Mhango, issued the warning in Phalombe when he was responding to residents’ claims of lack of access to Admarc maize.
According to Mhango, government will not hesitate to arrest such vendors so that people in the country should be able to buy maize at a low price. He said the country has enough food and the public should be calm.
“Our President Peter Mutharika always says that the country has enough food and no one will die of hunger,” he said.
He however encouraged Phalombe residents to report vendors to relevant authorities and they will take proper action. Mhango said the bags of maize they have are for household consumption and not for reselling.
Commenting on the issue, Member of Parliament for Phalombe East Amos Sailos assured his subjects that he will work hand in hand with them to reduce the problem.
