Willy Yabwanya Phiri, a presidential candidate in the controversial Football Association of Malawi (FAM) elections, says the resignation of FAM appeals committee chairman Justice Lovemore Chikopa is a clear indication that Saturday’s elections were a fraud.
Before the elections at Nkopola lodge, Chikopa had advised FAM not to go ahead with the polls following the violation of some of FAM’s statutes but the electoral committee which was headed by Justice Sunduzwayo Madise ignored the advice and went on to conduct the polls in which Walter Nyamilandu was declared the winner.
The appeals committee chairman then resigned on Tuesday saying it was not about the elections but rather FAMstatutes.
Reacting to Chikopa’s resignation, Yabwanya told Malawi24 that the decision is a clear indication that the whole process was illegal.
“This is a clear indication that the whole electoral process was illegal hence forcing Judge Lovemore Chikopa to resign. The incumbent FA president is to blame for the whole fracas because nobody undermine a court ruling but his association went ahead to conduct the illegal elections,” said Phiri.
On the recent revelation that FAM is set to take action on him and Wilkins Mijiga for taking football related issues to ordinary courts, Yabwanya said they had no option. “We had no choice but to go to the court because the association refused to take an order from the appeals committee to postpone the elections. “If they want to deal with us, they must first deal with Nyamilandu’s accomplices for disobeying the court ruling. They conducted an illegal election,” he said.
Nyamilandu won the elections with 27 votes against Mijiga’s 7 and Yabwanya’s 2. The losing candidates had earlier on withdrawn their candidacies.
