Breaking: Walter wins as Mijiga, Yabwanya withdraw at eleventh hour

Dust is refusing to settle at the 2015 Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Elective Annual General Meeting (EAGM) currently underway at Nkopola lodge following the decision by presidential candidates Willy Yabwanya and Wilkins Mijiga to withdraw from the race at the eleventh hour before Walter Nyamilandu has won for the fourth time.

Speaking in separate exclusive interview with Malawi24 a few minutes ago , the two confirmed the development saying they cannot be part and parcel of illegal proceedings.

“Yes we have withdrawn from the polls. The appeals committee ordered the electoral committee to postpone the polls following the floating of Article 22 but these people have vacated the injunction and they are now conducting the polls.”

“We won’t be part of this illegal proceeding. Too much irregularities yet the electoral committee has defied orders from the appeals committee,” said Yabwanya.

On his part, Mijiga said it was not on to go ahead with the polls yet the whole process is illegal.

“We are surprised with the electoral committee’s decision to go ahead with the polls yet the whole process is illegal. Why are they undermining the orders from the appeals committee? We won’t be part of it,” explained Mijiga.

The stand off between the two parties refused to die in the early hour of yesterday when Mijiga, Tiya Somba Banda and Yabwanya obtained a court injunction against the electoral committee’s decision to carry on with the polls.

FAM legal team vacated the injunction on Saturday afternoon, giving the Fa’s electoral committe all the mandate to go on with the polls.

However, five of the eight Super League of Malawi (Sulom) delegates were absent from the polls.

As it is, the incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu will go unopposed.

Nyamilandu has since won the poll with a whopping 27 votes against, 7 for Mijiga, 2 for Yabwanya
