A three year-old girl has drowned at Mwambazi River in the commercial city of Blantyre, Malawi police say.
Blantyre Police assistant public relations officer, Grace Mwale, confirmed the incident and said the girl drowned on Thursday afternoon.
“The girl escorted her grandmother to the river for fishing around 14:30 hours, when the grandmother was busy with fishing the girl got drowned,” said Mwale.
A postmortem result from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) revealed that the girl died due to suffocation.
The deceased hailed from Somba village in Blantyre.
