Three arrested for hacking boy with albinism in Phalombe

Malawi Police in Phalombe district have managed to arrest three men on suspicion that they were behind the hacking of a boy with albinism in the district.

Police have identified the three as Kingstone Mtiye, 40, of Saidi village T/A Jenala, Aubrey Maudedi, 26, of Chitawo village T/A Nazombe, and Moses Phillipo, 25, of Namandwa village T/A Jenala all in Phalombe.

According to Phalombe police station public relations officer, Sub-Inspector Augustus Nkhwazi, the three confessed before Police officers to have conspired to get bones of an albino for a market in Rumphi before engaging in the evil act.

Arrested.“The victim, Alfred Chikalo of Mnasi village T/A Mkhumba in Phalombe on the night of Sunday 29th November, 2015 around 2300 hours was fast asleep in his house alone when unknown thugs broke into the house with panga knives and started hacking him.

“The victim cried out for help and well-wishers rushed in to rescue him from the attackers. It was upon seeing the people who were alarmed by the cries of the victim that the thugs started running away,” Nkhwazi said.

Chikalo was then rushed to Phalombe Health Centre where he was referred to Holly Family Mission Hospital for treatment.

According to Nkhwazi, the victim sustained deep stab wounds in the head, in both arms and on the upper part of the left leg and has since been discharged from the hospital.

Meanwhile, police are still hunting for one more suspect who is currently at large.

The three will appear before court soon to answer charges of conspiracy to murder which is contrary to section 227 and attempted murder contrary to section 223 of the penal code.
